Somewhere in the 2010s, the filmmaker previously defined as much by his industriousness as his intelligence started to slow down, but before that, the Schenectady-born novelist turned director was one of the most vital voices in American cinema, steadily cultivating a body of work that served as a workable model for other DIY-minded types. More specifically, John Sayles hasn’t made a movie in almost a decade, since 2013’s underseen-and, even by the indie stalwart’s thrifty standards, seriously microbudget-drama Go for Sisters. (Sam doesn’t smile when he looks at it.) And while there’s nothing necessarily mold-breaking about Lone Star’s basic setup or style-certainly not when compared to other entries in the modern neo-noir cycle, bookended in the ’80s and ’90s by the Coens’ Blood Simple and Fargo-its qualities of thoughtful, hard-edged sociological storytelling and analysis are currently in short supply. Over and over throughout the movie, Sam listens patiently while old-timers tell him that they “broke the mold” when they made his dad-the man has been immortalized in a bronze statue outside city hall. ![]() Twenty-five years later, Lone Star is as much of a relic as the bleached remains that figure into its stark, mysterious cold open: a fluid, literate, and politically complex (as opposed to programmatic) independent American movie that respects its audience’s intelligence and fulfills an appetite for moral, intellectual, and ideological ambiguity. The film got the acclaim it deserved, including an Academy Award nomination for its original script, but didn’t claw its way into the canon like its Oscar-night rival Fargo, a movie with more of a flair for the absurd that could nevertheless be its bizarro twin. It was a tricky, noir-tinged Western steeped in swift, glancing allusions to cultural, military, and filmic history. In 1996, Lone Star felt like a self-conscious throwback by a filmmaker who’d made a career of hopping between genres. As the film opens, the character is contemplating abandoning his post, but after some old bones are unexpectedly exhumed in the desert, Sam finds himself growing naturally into the role he’d rejected-and learning more than he’d like to know about the good, bad, and ugly particulars of his hometown. Sam’s campaign slogan-“One Good Deeds Deserves Another”-leaned heavily on the idea of family branding, but there’s no shade for a prodigal son in his daddy’s shadow, and no future either. After initially departing the parched Texan border town of Rio County for the greener pastures of San Antonio, Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper) returned to run for sheriff on the strength of his DNA back in the 1960s, his father Buddy (Matthew McConaughey) was a local hero, flashing an untarnished golden badge and an easy, matinee-idol smile as emblems of state and moral authority. Lone Star centers on a hero navigating that hypothetical divide like a high-wire act-a cop on a thin-blue tightrope. ![]() “It’s not like there’s a line between the good people and the bad people.” ![]() When all cards have been moved to the player's liking within the tableau, they must click on the stock. It's also worth noting that since the ace is the lowest in rank, no card may be placed atop of it. It's important to remember that the king is the only rank that is allowed to be put into a vacant column. Since the king has no next-in-rank, it can't be moved to another pile, so it must be moved into a vacant column. If not a king, the source card must be moved onto a target card that is bottom-most in a pile, next in rank to the source card, and of the same suit.Ī column is empty when all cards have been moved from it. However, if there are cards on top of the source card, they all come along for the ride. In this game, technically, only one card may be moved at a time. As each is built, the game automatically sends it to a foundation. In order to win the game, the player must build all 4 suits within the tableau from the king to the ace. The remaining 3 cards in the deck are set face-down and squared in the stock. ![]() Except for the 12 hidden cards, 3 in each of the first 4 piles (or first 3 piles in Easy Scorpion Solitaire for a total of 9 hidden cards), all cards are face-up and visible. When the game starts, a pile of 7 cards is dealt into each of the 7 tableau columns. Scorpion Solitaire is played with a 52-card deck of standard playing cards. Scorpion Solitaire's goal is to build all 4 ordered suits from king down to ace in the tableau, each of which is automatically sent to a foundation as it's completed. However, the Easy Scorpion Solitaire variant is much easier. The game has a fair bit of luck in it and is not very easy to beat. Scorpion Solitaire is similar to Spider Solitaire but played more like Yukon Solitaire. ![]() ![]() You can also learn more about how to bleed your brakes with our How-To Hub resources. If you need a brake master cylinder, brake caliper, or other brake hydraulics, O'Reilly Auto Parts carries the right parts for your next brake repair. If your vehicle is leaking brake fluid, has weak braking pressure, or the brake pedal has no pressure and can easily reach the floorboard when braking, it is best to avoid driving your vehicle until you can inspect the braking system and make your master cylinder repair. This may lead to vacuum leaks which could affect performance, and may even cause your vehicle to stall when the brakes are used. Master cylinder leaks may not even be visible in some cases, but leaks from the rear of the master cylinder can allow brake fluid into the power brake booster and destroy its internal vacuum diaphragm. This can lead to a loss of brake fluid near the master cylinder, pulsing or a lack of resistance in the brake pedal, and a reduction or loss of braking pressure. Over time, the fluid seals inside the master cylinder may wear out. Brake master cylinders often include the brake fluid reservoir, which allows you to inspect the brake fluid level and condition and refill your brake fluid during repairs or service. This creates a pressurized force strong enough to engage the brakes and slow or stop your vehicle. With far less pressure the car could be brought to a halt. The brake master cylinder pressurizes and transfers hydraulic fluid in the brake lines to activate your brake calipers and wheel cylinders when pressure is applied to the brake pedal. ![]() All these systems meant that the driver no longer needed to stand on the brakes to stop the car. In 1959, the Delco-Moraine power booster mounted high on the firewall and became the system of choice. The Treadle-Vac was a single line system, which meant that a failure of any hose or joint could impair the entire system. The Bendix power booster was the Treadle-Vac, mounted on the floorboard right under the brake pedal and available on all GM cars in the 50’s as well as on Edsel, Lincoln, Mercury, Hudson, Nash and Mercedes models. It was a real Rube Goldberg system that worked. The arm rotated valves to close an atmospheric valved and open a vacuum valve, pulling vacuum air into a large chamber and pushing a bellows against a valve in the slave cylinder to increase fluid pressure to the wheels. More pressure activated a valve that, in turn, activated a triangular arm. In the Hydrovac system, when the driver pressed the brake pedal, fluid pressure was increased to a slave cylinder and the wheel cylinders. Systems such as the Hydrovac, the Hydroboost, and the Treadle-Vac (known as the Easamatic on 1952-1956 Packard) came factory-installed. Drum Brakes remained standard because they worked well and were cheaper to manufacture than disc brakes.īeginning the 40’s other power-assist systems began to appear. Chandler cars, from 1927-1929, came with a Westinghouse Vacuum Booster, and by the early-30’s, Lincoln, Cadillac, Duesenberg, Stutz and Mercedes were also including vacuum-assisted drum brakes. The intake manifold supplied the vacuum needed to reduce the amount of effort required to apply the brakes. In the mid-20’s Caleb Bragg and Victor Kliesrath had invented the vacuum-assisted brake booster for the aeronautics industry. The 1928 Pierce-Arrow was the first production car to come with a vacuum-operated power booster for brakes (the Bragg-Kliesrath). A small pump compressed air to stop the car, or, if you wanted, the same pump could inflate the tires or toot the whistle. Brake assist, for instance, was first made available in 1903 with the Chicago-based Tincher. Some early innovations with brakes now seem way ahead of their times. ![]() Perifery, a division of DataCore, brings focus and ingenuity to high-growth markets, such as media and entertainment and healthcare, by creating and developing innovative solutions that streamline and enhance digital workflows. The problem with these personal use licenses is that it’s easy to get used to them and think of them as de facto open-source licenses changing the terms then ends up leaving a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. Features removed from the free license in this week’s announcement remain in place for paid subscriptions as well as the educational and start-up license options. To be fair, it was pretty clear that changes to the personal use license were coming a while ago with the consolidation of paid-tier licenses almost a year ago, and the cloud-credit system that monetized rendering/simulation/generative design services happening on the Autodesk servers. We’d say that users of Fusion 360’s free personal use license would best be advised to export everything they might ever think they need design files for immediately - if you discover you need to export them in the future, you’ll need one of the other licenses to do so. ![]() Most of these changes go into effect October 1, with the exception of the limit on active project files which goes into effect in January of 2021.
